Bert was born at Winnipeg on February 24, 1918.
He attended Daniel McIntryre Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg and then worked at Canada Packers in St. Boniface, Manitoba.
He enlisted in the RCAF on May 11, 1940 at Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Bert did his training at #2 EFTS, Fort William; #1 Intermediate Flying Training School, Camp Borden; # 1
Advanced Flying Training School, Camp Borden, Central Flying School, Trenton. ďMy flying training took place before the British Commenwealth Air Training Plan was in place. Earned wings at Advanced Flying Training School, received further training in later course at the two other schools which became SFTS as we knew it with wings presentation on completion of training.
He was awarded his Pilot Wing on October 18, 1940.
His total course were made flying instructors! Served in SFTS, FIS, and CFS during the War with one consolation prize - an Atlantic ferry trip in November 1944. Frozen in interim Air Force when being demobbed. He was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1944. Offered permanent commission, and retired after 25 years, in May 1965. Post war in TC, AMC and ADC in both flying and Staff Officer positions.

Married Lorraine Boughton on May 1, 1943 in Saskatoon. Two sons, Grant(deceased) and Richard, two daughters, Carolyn and Susan. March 21, 2001.
