‘Pappy’ was born on April  10, 1917 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. In his pre-service background he was a Bank Teller at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Swift Current, Sasketchewan.
On June 10, 1940 at Regina, Sasketchewan he enlisted in the RCAF.
At #1 Mannning Depot in Toronto he was posted to #2 ITS at Regina. From there he was posted to #2 AOS, Edmonton, #2 B & G at Mossbank and #1 AstroNav at Rivers where he received his Observer in Febriary, 1941.

He was posted to the UK and arrived at Uxbridge in April of 1941. He did his OTU at Bassingbourne and on finishing his course was posted to #99 Squadron (RAF), #3 Group, Bomber Command at Waterbeach flying Wellington 1C’s. His crew consisted of PILOT- Eric Masters(RAF); 2ND PILOT - John Agrell(RAF); RG - Norman Platz(RCAF); F/E Sgt Hard(RAF); WOP - Sgt. Kershaw(RAF)
