Vernon was born at Milliken, Ontario and educated at Scarborough Collegiate. He enlisted at Toronto in Jan.
1942. He graduated from #9 A.O.S. at St. Jean, Quebec as a navigator on March 1942 and was posted to the UK in April 1942. His training consisted of #82 OTU and # 1664 HCU.
He was posted to #434 Squadron, 6 Group at Croft. His crew consisted of McKay, Lotz, Dalziel, Kincaid, Jenkins and Simpson.
Vern flew on 40 ops over Germany and was awarded the DFC. He remembers well the op they did over Normandy for the invasion, the night of June 5/6 1944. From September 1944 to June 1945, Vern worked for the Croft station navigation officer, then was sent back to Dartmouth, N.S. to prepare for the Pacific War.
Vern was demobbed at Dartmouth on August 31, 1945.
Since the war, Vern had farmed and spent 30 years with Massey Ferguson Ltd.
Vernonís first marriage was to Marjorie Thomson and they had three boys and three girls. His second marriage was to Isabelle Currah. Nov.8/01
