Joe was born on September 3, 1916 at Glanworth, Ontario. He received teacher training at London Normal School. Elementary shool teacher for 3 years, shool section 10, Westminister twp., County of Middlesex.
On July 1940 at London, Ontario he enlisted in the RCAF. He was at #2 Manning Depot, Brandon; Guard Duty,
Rivers, Man.; #2 ITS Regina, Sask.; #3 AOS, Regina; #2 B&G Mossbank, Sask.; #1 Astro Nav., Rivers, Man.
He was awarded his Observer Wing in September 1941.
He was posted to the UK and having completed his training was posted to 144 Squadron RAF at Leuchars in Scotland flying Hampden Torpedo Bombers. His crew consisted of Pilot - Hugh Bowden, (RAF); Nav. Joe Mennill (Observer); WAG - Doug Ellesmere, (RAF); WAG - Jack Vosper, (RAF).
First operation to Christiansand, had a flat tire and elevator control nearly severed. September 4-5, 1942, flew to Russia as protection for convoys to Russia. December 13, 1942 - shot down off Norway, attacking shipping.
Three Hampden Torpedo bombers attacked two freighters with flak ships off Norway. One plane shot down on turning in for attack. Other two aircraft attacked freighters. Our plane came down in the drink. Other aircraft got away. One of the two freighters was sunk. We lost our gunner Jack Vosper, other 3 crew members, got on life raft off the sunken ship. Our dinghy was punctured.
PRISON CAMPS: Dulag Oberoesel, Schubin, Poland, Jan.- Apr. 1943; Stalag Luft III... Apr. ‘43 to Feb ‘45;
Marlag und Milag Nord, Tarmestedt, Bremen...Feb 2/45 ...Apr.10/45...On march liberated by the British Armoured Corp in May 1945.
He was DEMOBBED at Toronto in July, 1945.
