Johnny was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on July1, 1923. He was a student at High School when World War II started but he couldn’t wait to finish school so he joined the RCAF on October 11, 1940. Next stop was #2 Manning Depot in Brandon and then off to do guard duty at  Sea Island, Jericho Beach, Patricia Bay and Garden Head, BC. On December 7th he was posted to #2 Wireless School in Calgary, Alberta till April 25/41 and then to #4 Bombing and Gunnery School at Fingal, Ontario where he received his WOP Wing on May 24th./41.
On June 4th he left Canada for the UK arriving on June 19 and on June 30th reported to #3 PRC at Bournmouth. On July 7, reported to #1 Signals School, Cranwell were he graduated from on

Sept 30 and then posted to #22 OTU at Wellesbourne, Mountford were he stayed till March 11/42. He was posted to #15 OTU at Harwell for a couple of weeks. Then transported a Wellington a/c to the Middle East via Gibraltar and Malta. Arrived in the Middle East on April 1 and did further training at Shallufa and Kabrit in Egypt.
On May 29th joined 37 RAF Squadron at Landing Ground 09 in the Western Desert flying Wellingtons. In June the squadron moved to L.G. 224 and then to Abu Sueir, Egypt.

I completed my tour with 37 Squadron at Abu Sueir. Total Operational Hours 253. I spent the next month at Helwan and Kasfareet in Egypt.
Posted back to the UK by boat - Suez to Durban on the New Amsterdam, Durban to Cape Town on the Larago Bay and then Cape Town to Halifax on the Cape Town Castle. Arrived in Halifax on Dec. 30th and all Canadians removed from boat and granted 30 days leave.
It is now 1943 and from Feb7-12 was at Rockcliffe, Ontario.
From February 13 till May 12/44 Screened WOP at 34 OTU, Pennfield Ridge, NB, flying Venturas. From May 13 till Aug 8th #10 AOS Chatham, then August 11th to November 7th #6 OTU Comox BC conversion to Dakotas.
December 17 returned overseas arriving in Bournmouth on December 26th.
