Well into his tour, Harry relates an early “hairy” trip to Hamburg on January 15, 1942. Blown off course, the captain had to call MAYDAY and coming in from the sea, managed to land at Leuchars (near Dundee). They were
lucky, the Wimpy in front of them crashed into one of the hills in the area.
Harry’s luck ran out on July 26, 1942 on another op to Hamburg. His aircraft was shot down over the northern part of Holland. He became a member of the Caterpillar Club and was led off, first to POW camp Dulagluft, then Stalag Luft III and Sullbin (Poland) XXIB, for the duration.
